To do a Nehru

During clashes with Pakistan, India secretly asked Israel for weapons. It sought mortars and mortar bombs without Israeli markings, got them, and publicly continued to condemn Israel

[Link]

To do a Nehru :
Idiom. Involves the following sequence of events -
1. Oppose creation of Israel
2. Ask Israel for help in '62,'65 and '71 wars.
3. Israel sends ammunition
4. Tell them to remove Israeli markings from ammunition (presumably because Muslim brothers in India will be offended otherwise.)
5. Condemn Israel in public; support Palestinian cause

Example: I helped him so much, still he did a Nehru on me.

What renunciation?

The entire media cabal crowed in unison that Sonia Gandhi made a supreme sacrifice by abnegating the throne in 2004. Here are some samples of the effervescent praise she got:

Times of India:

letting go of the PM's chair will be inevitably seen as an act of unparalleled sacrifice [..]

Indian Express:
By choosing to 'humbly decline', she has played a masterstroke [..]
For one, it allows her to assume the high moral ground and signal that she was by no means enamoured of power for its own sake, but power for the principles she believes in
The Hindu:
The Hindu, which described Mrs Gandhi's decision a "stunning act of self denial and political renunciation", said she had "grown enormously in political and moral stature" after Tuesday.

"You have proven wrong all those critics who saw you as a power-hungry person," wrote the newspaper's commentator Harish Khare in an article 'Salute to Sonia'.

According to the BBC, most newspapers said Mrs Gandhi's decision was in the "true Indian tradition" of renunciation.

What am I getting at, you might ask. The fantastic sycophancy of the Indian media? Not quite.
I want to analyse how much renunciation Sonia Gandhi has really practiced over the past five years. It turns out that her decision was indeed a "masterstroke" - not for the reasons suggested by the Indian Express - but because it has allowed her an unparalleled reign of five years of power without accountability.

Here is a google search for the phrase "sonia to decide" (with the quotes). It throws up close to 6400 results. A search on "sonia to decide", without the quotes throws up 1,420,000 results. Here are some sample results:

'Sacrifice of power' did anyone say? Renunciation? Puh-leez! Self-denial? Phooey! The lady is having an orgasmic reign of power out there! She runs the country according to her whims and fancies, her likes and dislikes, and her personal preferences and opinions.

And she's not the PM. Quite scary.

Did you know?

Muslims must elect Muslims - WTF!?

Pioneer OP-ED: Muslims must elect Muslims

I left the following comment on the above article:

The idea of Pakistan came up cloaked in such a proposal - Muslims should be represented by Muslims. The author makes unsubstantiated claims about the genuineness of the Batla House encounter, and also the "kidnapping" of "innocent Muslims" by the ATS. On the contrary, the ATS has virtually stopped pursuing Muslim terrorist moles holed up in ghettos in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and elsewhere.

This idea should be consigned to the dustbin.

What next? Hindus must only elect Hindus, Christians must only elect Christians - let us go the whole hog and create separate nations for everyone. Let us complete the madness that began in 1947.

Mccullum's catch to dismiss Dravd - this is good

[UPDATE: Youtube link available now. I have removed the slow non-Youtube version]

Everytime Rahul Dravid is dismissed, he wears this look on his face to suggest that the world has wronged him. Grow up Rahul, stop looking back while you walk back to the pavilion.

Marugelara O Raghava

(If you are viewing this post in a feed reader such as Google Reader, you might need to click through to the blog in order for the song to play)

Sudha Raghunathan does justice to this masterpiece from Thyagaraja. What a truly awesome composition.

NOTE: I use awesome in it's true sense - "inspiring awe". The slang meaning - "very impressive" - ill fits the need of a person like me describing a masterclass.

Here are the words and their meaning: (sourced from here)

Meaning

O Raghava (Lord Rama)! Why do you need to conceal yourself? The Universe itself is your form, with the sun and the moon as your eyes. By deep contemplation, inquiry, and search, I have directly perceived that you are everything, and everything is within you. There is no place in my mind for any other God. I solicit your protection.
